Barbara Pokorak
Barbara “Bobbie” Jane (Wiktorek) Pokorak, born February 23, 1934 in Johnson City, New York, went to be with her Lord and Savior on September 10, 2015. She passed away peacefully with her children and grandchildren by her side.
Barbara attended local schools in Johnson City and she graduated, Magna Cum Laude in 1989 from Western Connecticut State University.
She was a resident of Ridgefield for the past fifty three years since moving from Johnson City NY.
She was married on June 20, 1953 to Robert E. Pokorak and they had 55 wonderful years together. Bob passed away in 2008. Bobbie is survived by a son, R. Scott Pokorak of Brookfield and a daughter, Kirby Underhill of Bethel. She is also survived by five granddaughters Kirsten Underhill of Bethel, Sarah Underhill of Bethel, Kate Rodak of Brookfield, Stephanie Vogt of New Milford, and Brittany Pokorak of Brookfield. In addition to her children and granddaughters she is survived by five great grandchildren, Cameron Ashe, Ryleigh Araji, Robbie Coons, Lucas Vogt, and Rowan Vogt.
Barbara’s life was devoted to service. At the age of 31 years, she was stricken with Cancer and was plagued with this disease for the rest of her life. During this time, she became interested in Biblical Studies and delved further and further into religious studies. She studied Hebrew in order to reacquaint herself with the Old Testament and become a Biblical Scholar.
During her life she taught scripture to young and old alike. She taught many classes at different churches and most recently she completed a course on Healing Prayer at Jesse Lee Memorial Church in Ridgefield. For the last fifteen years she held a prayer group called “The Julians” every other Monday in her home. This was an extraordinary group of women that came together for spiritual guidance, and religious service.
Bobbie loved life! She knew how to have fun and good times. She was involved with local theater and was past president of the Ridgefield Workshop for Performing Arts. She was also a member of the Keeler Tavern and was interested in all of the Arts. She started classes in Poetry, Creative Writing and she was an Antiques dealer for many years.
She had the ability to be able to strike up a conversation with anyone and always made people at ease. Barbara was a great listener. She emanated kindness which people responded to. She cherished her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved the holidays with all the kids. She loved traditions.
Everyone came first in her world and she enjoyed life to its fullest. She was full of love, kindness and joy. She will be missed, but she is home with God and that gives us all comfort.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 21, 2015 at 10:30 AM at St. Elizabeth Seton Church; 520 Ridgebury Road, Ridgefield.
Friends will be received on Sunday, September 20, 2015 from 2 to 5 PM at Kane Funeral Home; 25 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield.
Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.
