Gerald P. Brady, 84, of Ridgefield died on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at his home in Ridgefield. He was the husband of Maude (Wells) Brady.
Jerry was born in Toronto, Canada on August 11, 1929, the son of Thomas and Florence (Hayes) Brady of Flushing, NY. He attended Flushing High School and graduated in the class of 1947. He attended Columbia University, earning his Bachelor of Arts in 1951. He played on the basketball team at Columbia University during his freshman and sophomore years.
Upon graduating from high school, he enrolled in the United States Army and served in the Korean Conflict during combat. He was a First Lieutenant and an anti-aircraft artillery officer. While in the Army, he also taught soldiers English, math and other academic subjects; this is where he first discovered his love of teaching.
Upon discharge from the Army, he returned to Columbia, where he earned his LLB from Columbia Law School in 1957 and his Masters of Science from the Graduate School of Business in 1958.
Upon graduation, after working for a law firm for a brief period of time, Jerry became a professor at Columbia in the Graduate School of Business, where he taught business law and taxation for over 30 years. He also wrote a number of books on law and taxation, including co-authoring seven editions of CPA Law Review, a leading publication in the field. He served as a consultant for many years for the AICPA. He retired from Columbia in 1994. Jerry’s older brother Joe and both of Jerry’s children attended Columbia.
He was a resident of Ridgefield since 1980, coming from Larchmont, NY. Jerry was a big sports fan, including being an ardent supporter of Columbia athletics, the New York Giants and Yankees. He was a devoted husband and father and loved spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife of 44 years, Jerry is survived by two sons; Joseph Brady and his wife, Amy of Brooklyn, NY and Peter and his wife Liza of Jersey City, NJ; four grandchildren, Lily, James, Patrick and Alexandra as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 10 am at Sacred Heart Church; 30 Church Street, Georgetown.
The family will receive friends at Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield on Monday, April 21, 2014 from 3-6 pm.
